Find Your Fitness

They say (whoever “they” are) that the best form of exercise is the one that you’ll actually do! I say that the best form of exercise is the one that you actually ENJOY!

When we were kids, exercise wasn’t even exercise. It was just PLAYING! We ran around and played tag with our friends, played sports, or just twirled in the grass. When’s the last time you twirled???

But then we grew up and the doctors and those pesky Nutritionists 😉 told you that you needed to move a minimum of 150 minutes per week to stay healthy (WHO, 2019). So you joined a gym and stared blankly into space, or a mirror, while you plugged along the treadmill thinking about the laundry that needed folding or the bills that needed paying. Pffththth! BOO! That’s not FUN!

Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean that exercise has to be monotonous or another chore to check off your list. I challenge that exercise should be something that you look forward to, an hour out of your day that you CRAVE.

Once upon a time, a friend invited me to go to a Jazzercise class. Shiny, metallic thong leotards and bulky leg warmers immediately came to mind and I tried desperately to hide the “Gurl, you fo real?” look on my face as I politely declined. But then a Groupon popped up in my feed shortly thereafter and I thought, eh, for $10 I’ll drink the kool aid.

I walked into class on day one and shuffled to the back row but was quickly dragged up to the front by my friend, Debbie.

“Amberly, this is Kerri-ann” she introduced me.

Kerri-ann wasn’t wearing a leotard or leg warmers so I figured she was safe to talk to.

“This is Amberly’s first class” Debbie said.

“Oh my God. You’re going to love it. Seriously. It’s addicting. I actually miss it when I
don’t come” said Kerri-ann.

Nevermind, this girl is nuts, I thought. How could you miss working out? As someone who’s had a gym membership since I was 15 years old, I have “exercised” in the traditional sense for over half my life but never, in all those years, was bummed that I missed a workout.

The music started and, surprisingly, it wasn’t “Let’s Get Physical” by Olivia Newton John. Instead, Macklemore thumped through the speakers. I stammered here and there, but the moves weren’t that hard. In fact…they were FUN! I was dancing! The people around me were cheering and smiling. Smiling and sweating at the same time? I didn’t think these two things could occur simultaneously! The hour flew by! I was dripping from head to toe with sweat by the end of it and as I got into my car to go home, I realized that I didn’t think about my To-Do list, once.

That was five-ish year ago and I still go to Jazzercise at least 3 days a week. And when I don’t, I miss it, just like Kerri-ann said I would.

I am so dang lucky to have found a workout that I love (Thanks, Debbie) and I want you to feel the same way. Be it Jazzercise, Hiking, Cross Fit, or Barre, there IS a perfect workout for you. One that will make your body and your heart sing simultaneously! The trick is to find it! So if the thought of jumping on the treadmill ties your stomach in knots, maybe it’s time to pick a new Fitness. Now is an opportune time to head over to Groupon and check out offers. Hit up your local fitness centers and classes. Look at to see if there are any physical clubs, like Running or Tai Chi, that you can sign up for. Find a friend to be a regular walking or yoga buddy. Form a club basketball or softball team. And if you still don’t find an option that you’re absolutely addicted to, then put your earbuds in, go outside, and baby, just twirl.
